Overview

The standard Bill of materials is used to represent products which are configurable and generally does Typical Characteristics include

1.    Collaborator's design

2.    Product family (Various Models) by Function / Destination

3.    On / Off Dates

4.    By Contract / Serial No of the End Product

5.    Translation to Production Part

6.    Process Scrap

7.    By Products

The Bill of materials for a product is defined in terms of

1.   Variants in a Product family If Not Used ( use STD Variant)

2.   Groups and Subgroups ( Assemblies)

3.   Single level BOM (Part list for a subgroup / group)

Bill of materials for a product

The bill of materials for a product is represented in terms of :-

1.  Group / subgroup (assembly)

2.  Part list

Every Assembly / Part in the Bill of Materials has a unique Part No. which can be up to a Maximum of 24 Characters.

Role of a Part no. (Identify the Material with ease)

This is vital in representing the bill of materials and identifying a Part in the BOM.
Generally it represents Material Category, Form, Fit, Shape, Size e.g SS304 Plate 5 MM thick

Part no as viewed by designer :-

Represents functionality with in the product group. Incorporate Collaboration details.
Part as viewed by production:-

Production (stores, Material Control, Purchase) identify the material based on Part Nos and to change the Part nos under multiple Collaborations is very laborious Process.
CES offers the Design Part No. translated to Production Part Nos. in the Bill of Materials.
Company standards on part coding :-
Every company has standards associated with the coding structure of the Part and varies depending on the type of industry. e.g For an Electronics Item XXX-XXXXXXX-XXXX
with each barrel representing1 - Type of Component (Electrolytic Capacitor)2 - Key Specification of the component(100 Micro farad)3 - The dependency of the Component (25Volt)   the part coding on the above basis would be ECC-M00100.0-025
e.g for a Mechanical Item XX/XXXX/XX/XXX   with each barrel representing

1.     - Material Category (Stainless Steel) 2 - Grade of Material (304L)3 - Shape/Form of Material (Plate)4 - Size (5.0MM)

the part coding in this case would be SS/304L/PL/0050
The above examples are only to illustrate different types of part coding schemes but the underlying concept remains the same viz.
Key Information in the Bill of Materials . The Bill of materials holds the following details :-

1.  Assembly/Group Details

2.  BOM specification

3.  Production Details

Assembly/Group Details

The Assembly Details include :-

Specify Bill Of Materials which includes :-

o     The Product Structure

o     The Variant,ON/OFF, Contract Applicability

o     Collaborators Information

o     Translation of Design Part to Stocked Part

Product structure

The BOM for a Assembly is represented only once in a product family and can be used at any level (Avoid Loops in BOM - This can be validated ) Component Position (Slno) in a Assembly
Each Part in the Bill of Materials for an assembly is identified by a serial no This signifies the position of the Part in the drawing. It is Mandatory to have the Component serial no. A provision is given to automatically generate the next highest serial no. with in an assembly.
Since Part introductions are common the Serial No Offers flexibility to number the new parts as 2A, 2AB... and takes care to automatically arrange them in the order of numerical portion of the serial no.

Applicability

The applicability offered by CES is of 4 types. Viz. Based On

o     ON / OFF Dates

o     Production Serial Nos / Contract

       On/Off Date Applicability

You can specify the component applicability based on an On date (i.e. component will be included in the BOM after this date (inclusive) ) and Off Date (i.e. Component will be excluded after this date).

Collaborators Information

Design based on Collaboration can be Maintained.

Translation of Design Part to Stocked Part

The Bill of material offers facilities to translate between Design and Production Bill of Materials. The Stocked production parts can be different from that of the Design Part No.

Production Details

The Production Details that are specified in the Bill of Materials are :-

o     Subgroup/Part (Assembly/Part)

o     Standard Assembly

o     Phantom Assembly

'Standard Assembly'
This indicates that an assembly whose Components are not dependent on variants. This is used to decide whether to club Orders for a Assembly/Group occurring at various Levels.
Phantom Assembly are assemblies used in the Design
Scrap Codes can Be Specified e.g Aluminium Rings / Blanks

By Products

By Products can be Specified for an Assembly. At the time of recording work order completions the By Products generated are also Received into stores.
